More than Turkeys

This Thanksgiving, Americans have a lot to be thankful for.

At LEAD, we’re grateful for our constitutionally protected freedom of speech. It’s one of the things that makes America so special, and it’s also one of the things that – if we’re not careful – can tear us apart.

Too many Thanksgivings have been tarnished by shouting over the turkey and arguing while pouring the gravy.

Right now, this division is far bigger than the Thanksgiving table. Our country is divided. A recent Pew survey showed that 62 percent of Democrats view Republicans as immoral. 72% of Republicans feel the same way about Democrats. More than 2 in 5 Americans believe we are on our way to a civil war.

We seem to be in a continuous fight with each other, but we can be better. We must learn once again to respect each other’s opinions and converse without conflict. We must unite to confront the challenges before us – not demonize those who have differing points of view.

This year, during football half times and in between desserts, enjoy the presence of your loved ones and talk about your stories—especially your American Dream story. We must not forget the things that bind us together and the harmony that comes from sharing experiences. Ask your family or friends what they have learned this past year about themselves, their businesses, or their own American Dream.

Americans have a lot to be thankful for. We have the chance to pursue the American Dream. We have the opportunity to speak freely without the fear of persecution. We have the tools to innovate and change the world. America is full of hope and opportunity.
